Balzac's story of a rich heiress who lives the life of a miserable pauper, thanks to her miser father. He's counting his coins, oh yes he is. On the right, the vain cousin, ruined by his dear old father's bankruptcy, looking out of the frame due to the specks of shame still left in his heart. He's on the brink, oh yes he falls.
